The forgotten media

Tape Degaussing in India — LTO, DLT, DAT & Backup Tape

Backup tape holds a complete copy of production and is the least managed media in most Indian IT estates. Here is how tape differs, why it is the most overlooked exposure, and how to sanitise and destroy it properly.

Why tape deserves attention. A tape in an off-site rack is a full copy of your production data, unattended, unaudited, and frequently retained long after the data on it has been superseded. Nothing about a tape generates a log entry, so nothing reminds anyone it exists.

1. What tape is, and how it differs from a hard drive

Magnetic tape stores data on a flexible polymer film coated with magnetic material. The read/write mechanism is a rotating head drum, and the format is inherently sequential. That single difference explains almost everything that matters operationally.

Hard driveMagnetic tape
AccessRandom, instantSequential — retrieval takes minutes to hours
VisibilityShows up in asset and monitoring systemsOften absent from asset registers entirely
ContainmentUsually inside the data centre perimeterFrequently off-site, in a third-party vault
RetentionTied to the refresh cycleOften "indefinite" because nobody owns it
ContentCurrent system of recordA snapshot — possibly older, possibly containing data since deleted

2. The specific risks in Indian organisations

  • Off-site tapes nobody audits. Stored at a third-party facility, accessed by that facility's staff, and reviewed by nobody from your side.
  • Snapshots containing deleted data. A tape from 2022 contains personal data that may since have been erased in production. Under the DPDP Act, a deletion request is not satisfied by deleting from the live system if the same data still exists on a tape.
  • Reel-based formats that outlive their support. DLT and older DAT cartridges accumulate in cupboards because no one wants to justify destroying them.
  • Encryption that gets switched off. Some organisations disable tape encryption for restore-speed reasons, leaving full plaintext copies off-site.
  • Tape as an exfiltration path. A single LTO cartridge is a high-capacity removable medium that leaves the building in a pocket.
A useful test. Ask: could you list every tape your organisation holds, where each one is, what period it covers, and who authorised its retention? If any part of that question is hard to answer, the tape inventory is your first action — before buying any equipment.

2. Which Proton degaussers handle tape?

3. How to run a tape degaussing project

  1. Build the inventory. Every cartridge: ID, format, capacity, the period it covers, where it is stored, and who owns it.
  2. Classify each tape's content. Does it contain personal data? Customer data? Anything that was since deleted in production? Anything still within a legal retention period?
  3. Apply the retention test. Tapes still within a retention obligation stay. Everything else is queued for destruction.
  4. Consolidate on site. Bring tapes to a controlled location, or use the 1100 wand where tapes cannot be moved.
  5. Degauss in batches. Load the drawer with cartridges, run the cycle, confirm the field reading.
  6. Record per cartridge. Tape ID, format, machine, verification value, operator, date.
  7. Crush. PDS-75 or PDS-100 for volume, with a rear output slide to discharge straight into a bin.
  8. Dispose of scrap through an authorised e-waste recycler and file the documentation.
  9. Close the inventory. Update the asset register so those cartridges no longer exist as live assets. That is what stops them being re-inventoried next year.

5. Cost and effort

Tape destruction is cheap relative to its risk. A drawer of LTO cartridges degausses in seconds and the crusher step is fast. The genuine cost is the inventory work, the retention decisions, and getting someone to own the process. Budget for the register to be filled in properly — that is the deliverable that survives an audit.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions Indian buyers ask most often. Cannot find yours? Call us — we answer technical questions on the phone.

Can backup tapes be degaussed?
Yes. Tapes use the same magnetic recording principle as hard drives, so all Proton degaussers handle them — LTO, DLT, DAT, DDS and 9-track. The 1100 wand is also suitable for some magnetic tape formats in the field.
Why is tape the most overlooked media in Indian organisations?
Because it is passive. Nobody logs into a tape, so nobody asks whether it still contains production data. Meanwhile it sits in an off-site rack, often for years, holding a full copy of systems that have since changed — and the old copy may contain data the live system has already deleted.
Do we really need to destroy old backup tapes?
It depends on your retention obligations. If the data on the tape is genuinely still within a retention period you must honour, destroying it creates a records problem. If the retention has expired — or the tape duplicates data that is already securely deleted — destroying it removes a real, ongoing exposure.
How do I get a defensible answer for tapes?
Write it into the media retention policy: what is stored, for how long, who owns it, when it is reviewed, and when it is destroyed. Tapes that are never reviewed are the problem, not the technology.
Is destroying tapes expensive?
No. Tapes are degaussed and crushed at a lower cost per unit than hard drives, and the labour is fast — a drawer load of LTO cartridges takes seconds. The cost is bookkeeping discipline, not destruction.
Can you destroy our tapes as a service?
Yes — see our on-site destruction service, where we run the batch at your site and hand back a signed destruction register against your tape inventory.
