An honest comparison framework
Degausser Brands in India — How to Compare
Proton, local assemblers, European imports and unbranded machines all compete for the same Indian buyers. Here is the framework we would use — and the honest reason we only supply one brand.
The framework
Eight questions to ask any degausser supplier
| # | Question | Why it matters | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | What is the model designation and the field strength? | Everything downstream depends on the specification being real | A named model with a published field strength and a datasheet |
| 2 | Is the machine independently evaluated? | An evaluation is evidence a third party verified performance | NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List reference, or a stated equivalent |
| 3 | How is field strength verified per cycle? | A cycle counter is not a strength measurement | A field reading on each cycle, or a pre-cycle interlock that refuses weak pulses |
| 4 | What is the cycle time, and what is my real throughput? | Drives cost per drive, not per machine | Cycle time plus an honest drives-per-shift figure including handling |
| 5 | What is the warranty, and who services it? | A degausser with no service path is a liability | Manufacturer warranty, routed through an authorised channel partner |
| 6 | Which spares are held in India? | Downtime is the real cost of a failure | A named India-held spares list |
| 7 | What documentation do I get? | This is the actual product you are buying alongside the machine | Datasheet, compliance statement, authorisation letter, verification certificate, register template |
| 8 | Are you the authorised distributor? | It is the one question whose answer is binary | A letter, and it checks out |
Brand types
The categories you will find in the Indian market
Proton Data Security
The range we supply. US manufacturer, T-4 and T-5 on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List, per-cycle field verification on four models, digital cycle counter on the T-5, and internal Gaussmeter on the T-4.
- Independent third-party evaluation
- Per-cycle verification options
- India warranty and spares through us
- Full bid documentation
Indian and Asian manufacturers
Common in the market, usually cheaper, and appropriate for non-audited or low-risk media. The questions to ask are about verification evidence, certification, and whether the field strength claim is substantiated rather than asserted.
- Often significantly lower capital cost
- Availability of field verification certificates varies
- Independent evaluation usually absent
- Spares and service are locally available
Unbranded / imported without channel
We would not recommend this for anything you will have to evidence. No India warranty, no India spares, no local documentation, and no way to independently verify the machine delivers the field it claims.
- Lowest purchase price
- No India warranty or spares
- Unverifiable performance claims
- No bid documentation
Why we do not carry more brands
Carrying several brands lets a supplier say yes to more enquiries. It also means carrying several service paths, several spares inventories, several documentation sets and several quality levels — and the machine that fails is usually the one where the supplier is least expert.
For a product whose entire purpose is to produce trustworthy evidence of destruction, we would rather be the specialist in one range than a generalist in three. Practically, that means:
- We know the field strengths, cycle times and failure modes of these machines well enough to advise you against a model you do not need.
- We hold the spares that actually fail, in India, because we see the machines every day.
- We can produce a complete bid pack for a tender without a delay while somebody chases a manufacturer.
- We can be honest that a cheaper machine would do, and we will say so when that is the case.
