Proton Degaussers vs Other Brands
What you actually gain by buying a Proton machine rather than a cheaper one — and where a cheaper machine would genuinely be the right call. Written by a Proton channel partner, not a marketing department.
What you gain with Proton
1. Independent evaluation, not a self-declared specification
The Proton T-4 and T-5 are listed on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for hard disk drive degaussing, and the PDS-75 and PDS-100 are listed for destruction. That means a third party evaluated the machine against published criteria. Most other machines available in the Indian market carry a manufacturer's own claim about field strength and nothing more.
The practical effect is in procurement. A tender that says "NSA listed" is satisfied unambiguously, with no argument to have with a technical evaluation committee. And when your auditor asks how you know the machine works, "it is on this list" is a complete answer.
2. Verification per cycle, on most models
This is the difference that matters most for compliance, and it is where many cheaper machines fall short.
| Proton model | What it proves per cycle |
|---|---|
| T-4 | Internal Gaussmeter reports field strength on every cycle. Removes the need for a separate instrument and a re-certification programme. |
| T-1.5 | Pre-cycle software interlock: capacitor voltage, switch state and other parameters must all be in tolerance before the "Go" indicator appears, so a weak pulse cannot be logged as a success. |
| T-1.2 | LCD touchscreen reports the field strength of every cycle. |
| T-5 | Digital cycle counter and LCD status — a running destruction log. |
| T-1 | LCD progress bar and a success notification with the Gauss and Tesla rating. |
A machine with no verification output still destroys data. It just cannot tell you — or an auditor — that it did, at the strength it claims. That is the gap that makes an unverified machine a compliance liability rather than an asset.
3. The T-4's Reverse Polarity
Most degaussers deliver a single-polarity pulse. The Proton T-4's patented Reverse-Polarity design delivers a strong positive pulse and a strong negative pulse — 20,000 Gauss each — fully automatically. Driving the magnetic domains in both directions produces better decorrelation of the stored pattern for the same cycle time.
4. Field strength headroom across the range
From 1 Tesla on the T-1 to 2 Tesla on the T-5, with the T-1.5 at 1.5 Tesla for the highest-coercivity media available today. Proton states the T-1.5 keeps pace as hard drive technology advances. That headroom is what protects the machine's relevance over a service life measured in years, not quarters.
5. A range that covers the whole job
Degaussers, manual and automatic crushers, a solid-state shredder and a portable wand, all designed to work as a cell. When flash is the PDS-88's job and magnetic media is the T-series' job, the process documentation can reference one manufacturer's approach rather than reconciling two.
Where a cheaper machine would be the right call
We would be doing you a disservice to pretend otherwise. Consider a lower-cost machine when:
- Volume is genuinely very low. A handful of drives a year, no audit, no tender. A T-1 is already inexpensive; going below that saves little and adds risk.
- There is no compliance driver. No regulator, no customer security questionnaire, no certification body, no tender. Then the evaluation reference is worth less to you than the capital saving.
- It is a non-critical site. A small office with no customer data, where the drives hold nothing sensitive.
And in those cases, we will say so on the phone. If a Proton T-1 is not the right answer for what you told us, we will tell you that rather than sell it.
Total cost, not purchase price
The comparison that matters over three to five years:
| Cost element | Premium machine | Entry machine |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Higher | Lower |
| Cost per drive | Lower where throughput is higher | Higher where cycle time is longer |
| Unverified cycles discovered late | Avoided — per-cycle evidence | Potential finding and re-destruction |
| Re-certification instrument | Not needed on T-4 | May be needed |
| Downtime | Lower — India spares, authorised service | Higher if spares are imported |
| Tender eligibility | NSA-listed options available | Often excluded from government tenders |
| Audit outcome | Defensible | Defensible only if the machine can produce evidence |
